A 1000K Cycle linking The medieval fortresses of Serbia
19th-21st July 2019
In July 2019 Eugene Hamill will cycle a 1000k round trip from Kalemegdan fortress in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, to raise funds for Sporting Hearts (www.sportinghearts.org) the children’s charity he founded back in 2004 after witnessing first hand the effect the Balkan wars had on children and the elderly in the former Yugoslavia. The cycle will follow the course of the Danube South East from Belgrade’s Kalemagdan fortress to the town of Smederavo with its imposing 14th century fortress and sun kissed wineries before continuing south to Galubac Fortress through the breath taking Djerdap Gorge, visiting Trajan’s Plaque, Decebal’s Head, Ram and Kladovo fortresses. We then cycle west through the green hills of the Resava gorge to the beautiful 14th centenary fortress Monastery Manasija. After visiting manasija we cycle north in the direction of Sabac fortress which clings precariously to the right bank of the river Sava. From Sabac we cycle further north to the jewel of Novi Sad the magnificent 17th century Petrovaradin Fortress. From Petrovaradin the cycle once again follows the course of the Danube and concludes with a return to Belgrade through Kalemagdan fortress along the newly developed Belgrade water front and finishing at Ada Ciganlja “The Belgrade Sea” for a well earned dip in its refreshing water, restaurants, music entertainment and café life.
